The Kodiak High School Bears football team got off on the right foot in Northern Lights Conference play Saturday, by downing the Skyview Panthers 18 to 2.

The Panthers, one of two teams from Soldotna, got on the scoreboard first with a safety late in the second period, in a game that was shaping up to be a defensive battle. When the Bears regained possession, they marched down the field with under two minutes to go in the half and got a touchdown run by Riley McFarlin from the 11. The ensuing point after resulted in two points after a broken play. That was all the scoring until the fourth quarter when the Bears added a touchdown and a field goal.

The Bears are on the road three of the next four weeks, starting with Soldotna on Saturday, and followed a week later by Houston. The homecoming game is against the red-hot Kenai Kardinals, followed by the regular season finale’ in Homer.

KVOK’s Doug Letch and Steve Rounsaville have the call at the end of the game:

(Bears 1 44 sec "First and 10 and Kodiak … like we had last week.")

Up next for Kodiak is another conference game against their arch-rivals, the Soldotna Stars:

(Bears 2 20 sec "They’re hoping this is … see how they do next week.")
