KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
Kodiak voters will decide on the school bond issue. Thursday night the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly voted 6 to 0 to place two school bond issues before voters in October. One of the bonds to go on the ballot is 12 point 5 million dollars for school district-wide deferred maintenance projects. The other bond issue is for the sale of bonds to renovate and add on to Kodiak High School. The ordinance, if passed, would approve close to 80 million dollars in bond sales with 60 percent of those funds reimbursable by the state of Alaska.
On last Thursday night’s agenda was a public hearing on the two ordinances and assembly members heard from a cross section of the public in favor of renovating the High School. Some of those speaking during the hearing were recent and future graduates of Kodiak High.
Following the public comments the assembly members had the opportunity to speak to the issue. Dave Kaplan and Pat Bronson had these comments:

The Assembly passed both measures by votes of 6 to 0 which means the two ordinances will appear on the ballot of the October 6, 2009 Regular Borough election.
It was pointed out at last Thursday meeting that there is no overlap between the two ordinances, meaning that the two bond measures are separate and serve different purposes.
