It was a good weekend of postseason sports action for Kodiak, with the football team upsetting their way to the second round, and a new state champion in cross country running.
Dylan Anthony kept Kodiak’s winning tradition going as he cruised to a handy victory in the state 4-A cross country running championships held Saturday in Palmer. He ran the five-kilometers in 15 minutes 42 seconds for Kodiak’s fourth straight individual championship. He beat Silas Talbot of Service High School by over six seconds, though Service won the team championship with 40 points. Juneau-Douglas was second, followed by South and West Anchorage respectively. Chaven Davidson was 22nd, Cole Christiansen was 44th, Jake Salus 48th, Caleb Nymeyer was 51st, Michael Gilbert was 60th, and Jordan Fogle was 68th.
Chloe Ivanoff led the Kodiak girls to a fourth-place team finish. She was 8th with a time of 19 minutes 16 seconds, about 18 seconds off the winning pace of West Valley’s Courtney Kisner.
Jaymi Bethea was 18th, Sarah Ng was 24th, Allie Smith was 27th, Annalise Delos Santos was 70th, Selma Ernest was 78th, and McKenzie Barnett was 79th.
Meanwhile on the gridiron, the fourth-seeded Kodiak Bears scored 17 points in the first half against top-seeded and previously undefeated Eilson in Fairbanks, and held off a third-quarter charge by the Ravens to win 24-14. It’s the third straight year Kodiak has beaten the Ravens in the play-offs to advance. The Bears will now face the Kenai Kardinals next Saturday in the second round of the state small school playoffs, in a game that will be played in Anchorage. The Kards defeated Barrow 47-to-13.
