Bears Bring The Sportsmanship at State Tennis Championships

The state high school tennis championships were held Friday and Saturday in Anchorage, and the Kodiak High School Bears were among the 17 teams that competed.

In the boys’ singles match, Jayse Taan of Kodiak was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Lathrop’s Phillip Martinez while Shiori Ohki fell in straight sets to Mimi Ahn of Dimond in the girls’ singles round of 16.

In boys’ doubles, Chris Malutin and Jake Powell were defeated by Christian Cecil and Cade Scott of Bartlett 6-7; 6-4, 6-4, while Rachel Hoyt and Juvy Small fell 6-2, 6-0 to Lauren Fukuoka and Ali Gilbert of Eagle River in girls’ doubles.

In mixed doubles, Joanna Garcia and Brice Thomas fell to East’s Taylor Michelle and Jonathon Taylor 6-1, 6-2.

South Anchorage won the overall team title with 35 points, followed by West with 30. Dimond was third, followed by East and Juneau. Kodiak tied with Anchorage’s IDEA (idea) School for 16th, with one point.
