The Kodiak Chapter of the Future Farmers of America is holding its Fun on the Farm event out at the Kodiak Island Fairgrounds on Saturday, and it will be full of, well, farm fun.

No event called "Fun on the Farm" would be complete without some fiddle music. Fortunately, the Kodiak Future Farmers of America have got that covered.

That’s 10-year-old Sawyer Olsen playing. He’s a fifth-grader at Northstar Elementary. Not only will he be performing with The Fiddleheads, but he will also be headlining with his own backing band:

(backing me up 12 sec "I’m going to have … backing me up there.")

Members of Kodiak’s White Twang, among others, will be Sawyers back up.

Sawyer started playing violin when he was four, using the Suzuki Method. But when he was six, everything changed:

(bluegrass ever since 26 sec "I heard some bluegrass … Irish and stuff ever since.")

He singles out two artists who he really likes:

(favorites 22 sec "Well, like my favorite … yeah, she’s awesome.")

(music up)

The FFA’s Fun on the Farm will be Saturday evening from 5 to 8 p.m., and there’s no admission charge.

I’m Jay Barrett.
