Overall voter turnout in Tuesday’s Municipal Election was unofficially calculated at 27 percent. Just over 2,600 ballots were cast from a base of over 9,600 registered voters. So, just more than one-in-four of those eligible took the time to cast a vote.
The lowest turnouts were in the Port Lions and Bells Flats precincts, where only 14 percent of registered voters turned out, which is about half the average for the borough. Larsen Bay had just a bit more, with 17 percent turnout.
The Old Harbor and Kodiak Number Two precincts had 22 percent turnout, while Chiniak had 23.
Kodiak Number One, at Fisherman’s Hall, had 27 percent and Bayside had 29 percent turnout. The highest was in Ouzinkie, where about a third of the voters went to the polls.
Several races are still too close to call. In the city, the vote whether to allow employees to discuss unionization is failing by just 17 votes, and in the race for a one-year council seat, Jon Whiddon has a slim lead over Mike Woodruff.
In the borough, Jerrol Friend also has a slim lead over challenger Dave King for the assembly, and while the 76-million-dollar bond to remodel and expand the high school is leading, it could change, based on how the count of absentee and questioned ballots goes. That will be determined on Wednesday when both the city and borough canvass the elections and the final counts will be determined.
