A public hearing was held during last night’s regular meeting of the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly. The subject of the hearing was the proposed new long-term care facility for Kodiak. In public comments and in the assembly member’s comments, support for a new facility was strong.

The purpose of last night’s hearing was to discuss the borough’s application for a grant from the state Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development. The Community Development Block Grant Program funds up to $850,000 for community development activities which benefit people of low and moderate incomes. If the grant is awarded to the borough, the money will fund the planning phase of a new care center.

Last night’s hearing was an opportunity for the public to comment on the grant application or to offer alternative suggestions. All of the comments at the hearing were favorable towards the grant application and the building of a new long-term care facility.
