The Kodiak High School Bears got two wrestlers into the championship round at the state 4-A wrestling tournament held at Chugiak High in Anchorage over the weekend, and placed 9th overall out of 22 schools. Anthony Atonio will be bringing home wrestling gold for his dramatic pin of Colony High School’s Renn Wright with three seconds left in the first round of their championship match at 285 pounds. Atonio steamrolled through the tournament by pinning four of his opponents.
Meanwhile, freshman Eddie Burris could taste the first place title in the 103-pound class against East High School junior Nathan Marquez, taking a 5-0 lead, before being forced into overtime, which the more experienced wrestler won with a takedown, 7-to-5.
Kodiak’s Pearson Brodie won 6th place in the 140-pound class.
The tournament was won for the fourth straight year by the Colony Knights who scored 220.5 points, with Lathrop second at 177 points and South Anchorage third with 159. Wasilla, East, Service, North Pole, Chugiak and Skyview rounded out the top 10. Kodiak had 98 team points.
