President Barak Obama today (Friday) declared a major disaster for the Kodiak Island Borough in the wake of the early October storms that caused so much damage. The declaration will allow Federal Emergency Management Agency funds to come to the borough to help pay for the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms, flooding, mudslides, and rockslides.
Federal funding is available to state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work.
Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures.
FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
