KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
Kodiak College has a new student newspaper. The paper is called "The Emerald Looking Glass."
KMXT’s Diana Gish tells the story of how it came to be:
Vince Lombardi said that "Once a man has made a commitment to a way of life, he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him. It’s something we call heart power. Once a man has made this commitment, nothing will stop him short of success."
Lombardi could have been describing Alicia Briggs. She’s the editor of Kodiak College’s new student newspaper. Brigg’s commitment began when her first article appeared in print.

Publishing "The Emerald Looking Glass" was a dream come true for the 26 year old student and mother of two.

While the opportunity seemed to come easily, the process of creating the paper wasn’t always smooth.

Briggs enthusiasm took her on sales calls to earn solicit funding for the paper. In the middle of her sales pitch she realized she had no idea what she was doing. Briggs went to Richard Harris of the Kodiak Daily Mirror who gave her a quick lesson on how to sell advertising for the paper. He also offered to print the first edition of the paper for free.
The paper was Briggs’ dream but it required a team of people to bring it into reality. Among her list of people to thank is the paper’s advisor.

Sue Jeffrey, who works as an assistant at the Kodiak College Library is equally enthusiastic about the newpaper and its editor.

Briggs said that while initially she gathered people together that she knew could write, she’s hopes to see as many people as possible contributing to the Emerald Looking Glass.
