Avoiding garbage bills could result in big consequences for homeowners in the Kodiak Island Borough.
Last week the assembly voted to take action against folks who are getting garbage service for free. The first step in collecting the overdue bills will be publishing the names of business or homeowners with outstanding balances. If restitution is not made in time, the borough will then foreclose on properties.
Assembly members discussed the idea after Borough Manager Rick Gifford explained the plan at last week’s regular assembly meeting.

In that exchange, Borough manager Gifford was speaking with assembly members Judy Fulp, Sue Jeffery and Louis Stutes.
Gifford explained that the action, which is based on borough codes, is similar to what happens when a homeowner is delinquent with property taxes.
