This Friday and Saturday, AARP is sponsoring a two-day, consumer protection and investment education workshop in Kodiak. While AARP is an organization for the retired community, the workshops are open to anyone who is interested in attending.

Several agencies are involved with the workshops, including the Better Business Bureau.

Tara Sims is a spokes woman for the Better Business Bureau of Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. She said that her organization will offer people in Kodiak advice on how to avoid scams and how to prevent – or survive- "identity theft."

(BBB 1 "This is a presentation … Federal Trade Commission")

Sims says that it is usually up to individuals to figure out when their identity has been stolen and that’s why it’s important for consumers to learn all they can.

(BBB 2 "The best thing …of identity theft.")

Other presentations on Friday will include weatherization and energy rebate programs.

The Better Business Bureau presentation will take place at 3 o’clock on Friday.

(BBB 3 "We’ll talk about … you can do that.")

Saturday’s workshops will cover several aspects of investing. All sessions are free.

The consumer protection and investment workshops will be held in the Kodiak Senior Center which is located at 302 Erskine Avenue.
