Two groups of students from Kodiak placed in the 2010 Alaska State Battle of the Books Competition. Today we take a look at one of those groups; the Kodiak Middle School team of 7th and 8th graders.

In the finals of the competition, the Kodiak team was in a three-way tie with Galena and Anchorage for first place. In a sudden death round, Galena edged ahead, putting Anchorage second and Kodiak third by one question.

The Kodiak Middle School team was coached by English teacher Peggy O’Leary who spoke with KMXT’s Diana Gish about the students and their success in the competition.

O’Leary went on to thank the Kodiak Island Borough School District for supporting the team. She also said she appreciates the state of Alaska for providing this kind of activity for students.

The other team that placed in the Alaska Battle of the Books competition was the 3rd and 4th grade team from Peterson Elementary School. That team, which was coached by Chris Hicks, placed second in the state.
