A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew conducted a medevac of a 38-year-old Filipino man from a car-carrier this (Thursday) morning. The 518-foot Modern Express was about 58 miles south of Kodiak at the time.
Raine Canua reportedly was found disoriented by his shipmates in his cabin late Wednesday. The shipping company of the vessel contacted the 17th Coast Guard District command center about 7:45 p.m. reporting Canua was suffering from symptoms of stroke.
The helicopter crew successfully hoisted Canua about 8:48 a.m. this (Thursday) morning and safely delivered him to awaiting medical personnel in Kodiak, who transferred him to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center around 9:45 a.m. His present condition is unknown.
Weather conditions on scene at the time of the hoist included 43 mph winds and 22 foot seas with light rain.
The Korean-flagged vessel was en route from Portland, Oregon, to Busan, South Korea.
This is the second hoist from a freighter in a week for Air Station Kodiak crews. They also performed a medevac five days ago of a Filipino crewman off the 656-foot Panamanian-flagged cargo vessel Stellar Harvest 200 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor.
