Malutin Has Subsistence Concerns

Concerns over potentially low red salmon returns to rivers on the Kodiak road system have prompted at least one man to contact his legislators about it. Iver Malutin phoned in during Thursday’s constituent meeting with Representative Alan Austerman and Senator Gary Stevens with his concerns.

He said Fish and Game’s forecast for the Buskin River looks especially bleak:

Malutin said he would like to see some form of fish counting go on at Pasagshak this year to protect the stocks. Austerman said he and Stevens are working on a solution with Fish and Game.

Austerman said Fish and Game has quoted him a cost of about 150,000-dollars to operate a weir on the Pasagshak River this summer. He said that sounds high, but the price tag could include set-up and removal of the weir.
