Bears Split Weekend Meet with West Anchorage

It was like night and day the difference between conditions at Joe Floyd Track during the two meets there this month. Torrential rains hampered competitors two weekends ago, but sunshine greeted them this weekend when the West Anchorage Eagles were in town.

On Friday, Samantha Oliver led the Lady Bears to a 65-26 win, with four victories in the shot-put, 100-meter hurdles, the 100-meter dash, and as the anchor in the 4-by-100 relay. Jaymi Bethea and Selma Ernest each had three victories.

On the boys’ side, Karsten Schick won three events, the 110-meter hurdles, the 400-meter race and the high-jump. Riley McFarlin won the 100-meter dash and was the anchor on two winning relays, as the Bears defeated the Eagles 49-42

Saturday was a different story, as West turned the tables on Kodiak, beating the Lady Bears 41-to-32 and the boys 38-to-35.

Next up for the Bears is a dual meet at Anchorage Christian School on Thursday and the Palmer Relays Friday and Saturday.
