In observation of mental health month, the Providence Kodiak Island Counseling Center has been hosting open house gatherings on Wednesdays.
The counseling center director is Melanie Nelson who was a guest on KMXT’s Talk of the Rock.
— (Mental Health 1 "So often in …substance abuse services.")
Nelson said that there are times and situations where mental health counseling can make a positive difference in peoples’ lives.
— (Mental Health 2 "There’s some situations …a lot of folks.")
Nelson said that coping with mental health or addiction problems is a life-long journey that can’t be solved quickly with instant cures but many kinds of help are available.
— (Mental Health 3 "Learning to live … be done quickly.")
She described a new program the center started offering this year which is called "family focused service." It involves home visits and activities with a clinician. Nelson said that the program is still taking shape but so far it’s been pretty successful.

This month the counseling center is hosting weekly brown bag lunch gatherings to highlight the services they offer. The final one will be next Wednesday at noon. The center is located near the high school.
