Air Station Kodiak C130 Assisting in Search

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Coast Guard is searching the North Pacific Ocean about 800 miles southwest of Kodiak for a crewman reported to have fallen overboard from the 751-foot bulk carrier Yasa Fortune today.

The Coast Guard command center in Juneau received the report just after 2 this morning and issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting the assistance of any vessels in the area.

A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules from Air Station Kodiak launched at 3:55 a.m. The Hercules joined the crew of the Smarty, a 626-foot bulk carrier, and the Yasa Fortune in the search.

Weather conditions at the time of the incident were calm with one mile of visibility and 43 degree water temperature.

The Yasa Fortune is a Marshall-Island flagged vessel and the Smarty is a Bahamanian-flagged vessel.
