The Ayakulik River closed to king salmon sports fishing on Saturday, joining the Karluk River, which was closed to kings in March.

But Fish and Game biologists say there are other places still open for the popular fish-and the reds will soon be coming in south of town.

Suzanne Schmidt is the Assistant Area Management Biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Kodiak. She explains the Ayakulik closure.

Where to fish 1 :29 sec "Effective Saturday…June 15."

The Ayakulik is far short of its escapement goals and is not likely to reopen to sports fishing…

Where to fish 2 :30 sec "The Ayakulik…the sport fishery."

But, the story’s a bit different for Buskin kings, though. Schmidt says it’s possible that the Buskin kings are still on the way…

Where to fish 3 :21 sec "On the Buskin…reopen that fishery."

Schmidt also says that if the kings fail this year, there’s always next year…

Where to fish 4 :28 sec "Well if they don’t….additional year."

Now, if you’ve got itching rod fingers and need your king salmon fix, Schmidt suggests driving out to Monashka because the kings are coming in out there….

Where to fish 5 :22 sec "If you want…to 3 year olds."

Where to fish continued 28 June 2010

If red salmon are you preferred species, you’re in luck. Think red, white, and blue, and head out south of town for the July 4th weekend….

Where to fish 6 :43 sec "If someone…return there as well."

Fish and Game biologist, Suzanne Schmidt.
