Non-profit organizations are an integral part of life in Kodiak. They provide services that, many times, are unavailable otherwise. Their use of volunteers helps to keep costs down. And they know how to squeeze the most out of the least amount of money.

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly last week made the borough’s annual contribution to a number of local non-profits. KMXT’s Maggie Wall has more.

Assembly members voted to distribute close to $350,000 to more than 20 different local non-profit groups.

Assembly member Jerrol Friend praised the efforts of the volunteers and others that support Kodiak’s non-profits.

Many of the organizations that received funding had representatives at last Thursday’s borough assembly meeting. Here is a sampling of their comments explaining what their group does:

The Daisy Girl Scouts passed out cookies to assembly members before the vote. But, judging by the written resolution prepared ahead of time for the assembly, it would appear that those trademark cookies had no effect on the outcome of the vote.

In the interest of full disclosure the Kodiak Public Broadcasting Corporation, which owns and operates KMXT, received $7,500 from the borough.
