The Kodiak High School Bears football team has been practicing for a week now, and will kick off the 2010 campaign Saturday on the road against the Eielson Ravens. The eight-game season has the Bears on the road half the time, but never two weekends in a row.

Kodiak’s home opener is week two against the team’s arch rivals, the Soldotna Stars, who have stymied Kodiak’s championship dreams three of the last four years. Then it’s back on the road to play the Wasilla Warriors, and then home for two in a row in weeks four and five.

Kodiak hosts the Barrow Whalers on their first visit to the Rock. The Bears have beaten Barrow twice in the schools’ histories – including one playoff game in a snow storm on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. The Whalers will be followed by the Homer Mariners, and then it’s back on the road to face the defending small school state champs, the Kenai Kardinals. One more game at home against Houston and then Kodiak wraps up the regular season on the road against the Skyview Panthers.
