The Kodiak High School Bears were on the road to Wasilla Saturday, facing off against their only large-school opponent of the year, and it turned into quite the shoot-out. It took three fourth-quarter touchdowns by the home team to keep the Bears at bay, and the Warriors won 43 to 25.
Kodiak struck on the game’s first possession, capping an 80-yard march with a 30-yard touchdown pass between quarterback Matthew Chavarria and Branden Canete. The pair hooked up for another 80-yard TD in the fourth period. Canete had six catches for 176 yards, while Chavarria was 13-for-28 for 264 yards. He also ran for a touchdown in the third. The offensive outburst was the opposite of last week’s game against the Soldotna Stars, when Kodiak could only manage 30-yards of total offense.
The Bears fall to 1-and-2 overall on the season, and remain at 0-and-1 in the Northern Lights Conference. Kodiak will host the Barrow Whalers this Saturday at Baranof Park, and then end the season with four straight conference games, which will determine their postseason fate.
Meanwhile on the cross-country course at the Bartlett Invitational, the Kodiak boys finished second with 79 points to Service High’s 44. Lathrop had 89 for third, followed by West Valley and Chugiak. The Kodiak girls were eighth with 187 points. South Anchorage won with 61 points, followed by Grace Christian, Dimond, Service and West Valley.
Jaymi Bethea was the top Kodiak finisher, coming in third at 19-minutes even, 15-seconds off the pace. Sarah Ng was the only other Bear in the top 50, coming in 17th, with a time of 20-minutes 7-seconds.
Nathan Deer was the top Kodiak boy, finishing 10th, with a time of 16-minutes 46-seconds. Cole Christiansen was one second behind in 11th. James Osowski was 13th, just a dozen seconds later. Jordan Fogle finished 20th, Caleb Nymeyer was 25th, Jake Salus was 39th, and Scott Walker was 45th.
The races had over 700 runners from 24 different high schools around the state.
