If you’ll be out fishing this weekend, be sure to keep in mind that all rivers that feed into Chiniak Bay or Monashka Bay are closed to salmon above the highway.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says this is an annual closure to allow salmon up the rivers to spawn. The rivers usually remain closed August 1st to September 16. That September date varies depending on escapement levels for salmon in the road system rivers.
You can still fish and keep Dolly Varden that are caught above the bridges, just not salmon.
On another outdoor note, August 1st marked the opening of deer season on the road system. Bucks only may be taken.
