The Democratic Party is fielding a challenger for Kodiak’s House seat held by Republican Alan Austerman.

Terry Haines is a commercial fisherman and Kodiak city councilman. He filed papers Wednesday afternoon to run in the 36th District which includes Kodiak Island and parts of the Lake and Peninsula Borough.

Neither candidate was available for comment Wednesday but the district’s Democratic chairman Dick Ross told KMXT his party feels the seat is up for grabs.

Austerman was first elected to state office in 1995 and has served a term in the state Senate. He spoke to KMXT earlier this week about a hypothetical challenger.

No debates have yet been scheduled. Election Day is November 2nd. Haines is up for re-election for city council next month. He confirmed today that he’ll be running in both races.
