KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
Alaskan Author Dan O’Neil was a recent guest on KMXT’s Friday Morning Show. O’Neil grew up in San Francisco and was educated at Berkeley. He moved to Alaska in the 70’s where he worked on the pipeline and in construction. In addition to writing, O’Neil served as a researcher at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and as an opinion columnist at the Fairbanks Daily News Miner. His first book, "The Firecracker Boys" was originally released in 1994 and was highly acclaimed by critics, historians and educators. The recently re-released book tells the story of how, in the late 1950’s, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission tried to explode megatons of thermonuclear bombs near the arctic village of Point Hope. The fight to stop the project led to the birth of "The Tundra Times" (the first Alaska Native newspaper) and the environmental movement.
O’Neil was in town to deliver a lecture at Kodiak College. At KMXT he was interviewed by two Kodiak High School journalism students: Willy Roberts and Sam Tuckfield
