Long time Kodiak City Councilman Charlie Davidson unseated one-term incumbent Terry Haines to win re-election to the city’s governing body, after retiring from it two years ago. He trailed Haines by two votes after election day last week, but when absentee and questioned ballots were counted Wednesday, he had a 14-point lead with 506 votes to Haines’ 492. John Whiddon won the other three-year term with 551 votes and Pat Branson, who ran unopposed, won the one-year term with 792 votes. She’ll be retiring from the borough assembly to join the council.

Davidson, who opposed the city’s fighting unionization, said that Ballot Measure One was not what brought him back to politics.

(Charlie 1 25sec "ButI still feel saddened … of First Amendment.")

The measurefailed at the polls by 39 votes. Davidson criticized the pointedly partisan adsthat the city ran this year:

(Charlie 2 27sec "Well,I thought it was a … the right to do that.")

Davidson, who works as a stevedore on the Kodiak waterfront, knows exactly what hewilldo as soon as he’s sworn in:

(Charlie 3 36sec "Thevery first thing … community, as far as I’m concerned.")

TerryHaines, upon hearing of Davidson’s victory, likened him to a veteranquarterback who keeps coming back for more:

(Charlie 4 7sec "Contraryto what Terry says … probably my last hurrah.")

Theelection will be certified at the regular city council meeting of October 28th,and then Davidson will be sworn in for his sixth full term on the council. Hefilled in temporarily last year when a councilman resigned.
