It’s not too late to submit questions for an upcoming candidate forum. Vying for the District 36 House is incumbent Republican Alan Austerman and Democratic challenger Terry Haines. The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce and KMXT are sponsoring a debate between the two men scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly’s chambers.

Chamber Executive Director Trevor Brown says the candidates will be fielding questions drafted by a panel as well as those submitted by the public in advance.

— (debate 1) :33 "Well we have some … from the public."

The forum will also be broadcast live on KMXT. Brown says the chamber wants to encourage public engagement with the political process and that these types of forums are useful.

— (debate 2) :10 "I believe it allows … to the voting booth."

Austerman is finishing a two-year term as District 36 House representative. He was first elected to state office in 1995 and has also served in the state Senate. Haines was elected to the Kodiak City Council in 2007 but narrowly lost this month’s re-election bid by just 14 votes.
