Ammonia Release Drill

Kodiak City and Bayside Volunteer fire departments conducted a hazardous materials drill on the spit near Saint Paul Harbor Monday night. They responded to a simulated anhydrous ammonia leak. The chemical is a key agent in the ice-making equipment at Kodiak’s many fish processing plants. It is explosive under certain conditions, can burn the skin and is harmful or fatal if inhaled.
