The Kodiak Island Borough is applying for funds to upgrade the dock at Anton Larsen Bay. The borough has estimated the job would cost about $2 million but at this point is asking for a portion of that for design and engineering. The borough has already asked the state for $200,000 and is now approaching the Denali Commission for $110,000 toward design and engineering work.

At last Thursday’s meeting the tribal administrator for the Native Village of Afognak, Melissa Borton, commended the borough for making the dock a priority.

(assembly1) :39 “The Native Village … in the process.”

In other news, Borough Manager Rick Gifford reported there had been some damage from Wednesday evening’s windstorm.

(assembly2) :14 “There was some … winds last night.”

The borough is also moving forward with an ordinance that bans smoking in all of its buildings as well as 50-feet outside. Because of the borough office’s proximity to the high school, smoking in the parking lot would be technically banned.

Gifford was quizzed on how strong the ordinance was and whether people could smoke inside a vehicles in the parking lot.

(assembly3) :27 “It becomes one of those things … enforce that.”

The ordinance won’t be brought before a public hearing until next month. That’s because the borough has canceled its regular meetings for the rest of the month.

Also at last week’s meeting the borough also accepted a $462,000 FEMA grant for seismic upgrades to the Kodiak Middle School. This latest grant is part of nearly $3 million in federal money steered to Kodiak’s schools for upgrades.

School Superintendent Stewart McDonald commended the borough for helping raise the money.

(assembly4) :25 “We are the … to say thank you.”

The borough’s next regular meeting is scheduled for December 2nd.
