Kodiak Mayor Carolyn Floyd has been nominated for a prestigious award by the National League of Cities. The names of the six finalists for the Women in Municipal Government Leadership Award were announced Thursday.

Floyd said Friday that she didn’t know how she came to be nominated for the award, but was excited nonetheless.

(Floyd 1 31 sec "Well, it feels great to be … problems that we have locally.")

Every year the leadership award recognizes a female municipal official for improving a city or town’s quality of life, particularly if her leadership serves as a specific mentoring model for future women leaders.

Floyd said a former state senator and gubernatorial candidate was a female role model and inspiration for her:

(Floyd 2 21 sec "Arliss Sturgulewski was one … the college established.")

Kodiak Island Borough Mayor Jerome Selby said Floyd’s leadership skills are such that without her, Kodiak might not have a University of Alaska branch campus today:

(Floyd 3 22 sec "You know we have the … that award. That’s super.")

Selby and Floyd spoke with KTOO’s Casey Kelly as they were preparing to leave Juneau after last week’s Alaska Municipal League meetings.

Besides Floyd, city councilwomen from Forest Hill, Texas; Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and Charlotte, North Carolina; and a deputy mayor from Dallas and a mayor pro tem from Duarte, California, were nominated.

The winner will be announced on December 3rd at the National League of Cities convention in Denver.
