A loss by two-tenths of one second in the last event of the day Saturday cost the Kodiak High School Girls their first state swimming championship. Going into the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Lady Bears had a three-point lead over rival Service. After 3-minutes 36-point-14 seconds, Service had taken first and scored 18-points, while Kodiak scored 14 points in second.

The team totals had Service with 94-points to Kodiak’s 93. Dimond was third with 73, Chugiak fourth with 60 and East Anchorage fifth with 58. Ketchikan, West Valley, Juneau Douglas, West Anchorage and Kenai rounded out the top 10.

Kodiak’s Laura Griffing set a new state record in the 100-yard breaststroke, shaving over a second off the old mark, with a time of 1-minute 4.5-seconds. Jori Lindquist is the state champion in the 200-freestyle, and the Kodiak girls also won the 200-freestyle relay.

On the boy’s side, Kodiak came in sixth, with 33 team points. Dimond won with 91, despite not having a single race winner. South was second with 76 points, followed by Juneau Douglas with 63, Petersburg with 59 and Lathrop 53. Seward, Kenai, West Valley and Sitka round out the top 10.

Nando Macinko won the state title in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.5-seconds.
