Bears Basketball Season Starts Friday

The Kodiak High School basketball season kicks off this weekend, with the boys playing Eagle River, and the girls taking on defending class 1-A state champion Port Lions.

Friday, games kick off with the boy’s JV at 4 p.m., followed by the Lady Bears playing the Port Lions Kings at 5:45. The varsity boys play at 7:30.

Games are earlier on Saturday, starting with the girls at 3 p.m., followed by JV boys at 4:45 and varsity at 6:30.

The Lady Bears don’t start their regular season schedule until early January this year, as the annual Joe Floyd Christmas Basketball Tournament has been moved in an effort to attract more teams. Last year the boys’ bracket was one team short. The move seems to have worked, as both the boys and girls schedules are full.

Coming to town to play in the girls’ bracket will be West Valley from the Fairbanks area, Thunder Mountain from Juneau, and Mount Edgecumbe from Sitka.

The Mount Edgecumbe and West Valley boys will also be coming to the Rock, as will Thunder Mountain’s cross-town rivals, the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears.

The Joe Floyd tourney kicks off on Thursday, January 6th.

While the Lady Bears don’t open their regular schedule until then, the boys will be spending New Year’s Eve in Anchorage, playing at the ACS tournament starting December 30th.

The girls will have only two home stands this year after Joe Floyd, first against Homer in late January and then Skyview in mid February. The boys have three home dates: Wasilla in January, with Skyview and Colony in February.
