The 44th Annual Joe Floyd Basketball Tournament kicked off yesterday afternoon with four games and a split decision for the hometown Kodiak Bears.

The Mount Edgecumbe Braves from Sitka brought both their boys and girls teams. The boys opened the tourney with a 47-42 upset win over the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears. The Lady Braves didn’t fair as well against the West Valley Wolfpack, losing 49-to-24. West Valley is a Fairbanks school.

In the evening games, the Kodiak boys fell to West Valley as well, 58-to-46. In their first game of the season, the Lady Bears dominated the Thunder Mountain Falcons in the nightcap, 43-to-25.

Thunder Mountain is the relatively new high school in Juneau.

In today’s games, the West Valley girls play Thunder Mountain at 2 p.m. and the Wolfpack boys take on Juneau Douglas at 3:45. The Lady Bears take on the Braves at 5:30, while the Kodiak boys play Mount Edgecumbe in the nightcap at 7:30.
