School Start, End Dates Debated

The Kodiak Island Borough School District has taken to the internet to gather public opinion about starting and ending dates for the next two school years. Ron Fried is the assistant superintendent for the school district.

There are three choices for each of the school years, with start dates ranging from mid August to early September. Fried says there are pros and cons to all the choices:

The online poll was scheduled to come down over the weekend, but Fried says there will still be plenty of opportunity to provide comment, either to his office or directly to the school board, which has the final say.

By law, the school year has to be a certain length; for example, teacher contracts are for 189 days, and students must have 180 days in class.
