Everyone loves a good story. And good stories are what an organization celebrating the Kodiak base history is hoping to attract.

KMXT’s Maggie Wall hosted Tuesday’s Talk of the Rock program and has this report on plans to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Kodiak Naval Base:

This year marks the 100 Anniversary of Naval Aviation in the United States. It also marks the 70th anniversary of the commissioning of the Naval Air Station in Kodiak.

The Coast Guard base will host a community event to mark the day of commissioning-June 15, 1941 and is looking for people to tell their stories about the base..

Sandra West is on the committee organizing the 70th year event:

Cowboy Cobis came to Kodiak in the 70s. Through the years he’s worked in just about every shop on the base. He recalls that before all the environmental clean-ups and new buildings, there was a lot of great finds for those who cared to scrounge around the derelict buildings left by the navy. He spoke with local military historian Dave Ostlund.

West says people should invite old base friends to the June celebration.

Dave Ostlund confirmed the old rumor that there indeed was a submarine base located at the bottom of Marine Hill in Woman’s Bay. You can hear his submarine stories and the complete interview from Tuesday’s Talk of the Rock program by going KMXT dot org.
