While bears have been spotted out and about this week in and around Alaska’s capital city, the bruins around Kodiak City are still in their dens. That word from Kodiak Fish and Game biologist Larry Van Daele.
He said there have been bears spotted on the south end of Kodiak Island, but that it’s not unusual for this time of year. He does expect bears here on the north end to start awakening from their long winter naps in the next couple of weeks.
Juneau Fish and Game biologist Ryan Scott said besides the sightings in Juneau, several other calls have come in from other Southeast communities.
He reminds folks that it’s time to dispose of garbage properly and to put other bear attractants, such as dog food and bird feed, out of reach.
