There was no objection yesterday evening in the House Special Committee on Fisheries over the confirmation of Sue Jeffrey and two others nominated to the Alaska Board of Fisheries.

Jeffrey was nominated to the board on Sunday by Governor Sean Parnell. The special committee on fisheries is one of four stops her nominations is scheduled to make.

Two people spoke out in favor of Jeffrey’s nomination. One was Kodiak resident Don Fox.

(Jeffrey BOF 1 35 sec "I’ve known Sue for … board of fish.")

Steve Brown, a Homer fisherman and president of the Concerned Area M Fishermen group, said he’s heard good things about Jeffrey and supported her confirmation:

(Jeffrey BOF 2 22 sec "I do not know Sue Jeffrey … do a fine job.")

Though Jeffrey sailed through with only endorsements, the other two candidates, incumbents Bill Brown of Juneau and John Jensen of Petersburg, were opposed by Dillingham fisherman Robin Samuelson, who criticized some of their votes regarding Bristol Bay in the past. Both Brown and Jensen received the endorsement of sport fishermen on the Kenai Peninsula.

Committee chairman, Representative Steve Thompson, wrapped up the proceedings after less than an hour:

(Jeffrey BOF 3 12 sec "Then without objection … for further consideration.")

The Board of Fisheries candidates must still face both the House and Senate resource committees before a joint confirmation vote on April 8th. The three year terms begin on July 1st.
