City Sets Harbor Parking Rates

Kodiak’s harbor users will be able to pay for parking as they use it under a new plan approved last week by the Kodiak City Council.

Next on the list of things to do is to order the self-pay machines that will allow fishermen to pay by cash, smart card or credit card. KMXT’s Maggie Wall has more.

The Kodiak City Council at a special meeting last week approved a plan allowing eligible harbor users for pay for long-term parking using a self-pay kiosk. The pay-as-you-go option, addresses the concern that fishermen had that they shouldn’t have to pay for a month or 6-months at a time if they only need parking for, say, two weeks.

You may recall that City Mayor Carolyn Floyd told council members, city hall staff, and the harbor staff to set up a meeting with the port and harbor advisory board and figure something out.

Kodiak City Manager Aimée Kniaziowski said they met and came up with this new parking plan:

The cost of parking will be a dollar a day.

City Council Member John Whiddon said he was pleased with the plan:

As far as making money, harbor staff estimates that the new pay-as-you-park kiosks will generate from $20,000 to more than $60,000 a year.

And, while it seems the problem of paying for parking is solved, it’s not yet a totally done deal. The council still must authorize the purchase of the self-pay kiosks at a future meeting.
