The Kodiak High School Bears baseball team is heading into the state championships ranked first from the Southcentral Conference, after holding off a surprising Soldotna Stars team on Saturday.
The Stars jumped out to an early lead, but a seven-run sixth inning put the Bears in the lead for good – but Soldotna didn’t roll over, scoring three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make it close. The final was 9-7, Kodiak.
The Bears beat Wasilla and Palmer earlier in the tournament. So-Hi upset three-time defending Southcentral champions Colony to advance to the championship game against Kodiak.
The state tournament kicks off Thursday in Palmer.Kodiak’s first game is against Lathrop.
