Port Lions Girls Win Four State Titles in Track and Field; Kodiak Brings Home Two

The Port Lions girls track and field team brought home four state titles from the track and field championships held in Fairbanks over the weekend.

Meanwhile Kodiak High School brought home two gold medals.

Port Lions senior Katie Strong won the small school’s 3,200-meter championship in 11-minutes 48-seconds, and the 800-meter in 2-minutes 25.8-second. Sophomore Raissa Boskofsky won the high jump with a leap of 4-feet 8-inches, and the 300-meter hurdles in 47.9-seconds.

Kodiak’s Jaymi Bethea sprinted to an early lead and cruised to a three-second victory in the large schools 1,600-meter race on Saturday, with a personal best time of 5-minutes 5.72-seconds. The Lady Bears placed 10^th with 20 points. Wasilla won with 85.

The Kodiak boys team of Caleb Nymeyer, Nathan Deer, Jordan Fogle, and James Osowski won the state title in the 4-by-800-meter relay. Coach Marcus Dunbar said the squad had lost at that distance five times this season, most recently at Regions last week. Determined to avenge those losses, the team ran the fastest 4-by-800 in the state this season, winning in 8-minutes 4-seconds. Overall, the Kodiak boys were 11^th, with 22 points. Dimond took the team title with 74 points.
