City residents interested in running for local office should start thinking about getting their nominating petitions together. They will also find that there is one less incumbent to face come election day.

City Councilman Tom Walters has been on the council 18 years, but announced Thursday night that he will not seek re-election.

City Clerk Debra Marlar said the filing period is different this year. The open period for petitions for city mayor and two city council seats starts on Monday and runs through 4:30 p.m. August 15.

Nominating petitions for the open positions for this fall’s city elections are available at the clerk’s office.
