Kodiak High School alum Trevor Dunbar, a running star at the University of Portland, dropped by KMXT’s Jock of the Rock on Saturday. Hosts Derek Clarkston and Ron Sears talked with him about recovering from injury this summer and preparing for the upcoming cross-country season.

They also looked back on this spring’s track season, which saw Dunbar fall short of his personal goals at the nationals.

(Dunbar 1 37 sec "I was ninth in my heat … be up there with them.")

He said suffering that defeat proved to motivate him:

(Dunbar 2 22 sec "The one thing about not … how well I can do.")

Last fall Dunbar placed 25th in the cross-country nationals, and this year his goal is even higher:

(Dunbar 3 30 sec "This year I’ve gotta go … own personal accomplishment.")

Dunbar said he suffered a stress fracture in one of his legs, and has been re-habilitating all summer, but that he’ll ready for the college cross country season:

(Dunbar 4 30 sec "I will be. I will be … I’m just getting back.")

He ran in a mile race in Anchorage this spring, with the goal of breaking the four-minute barrier. His personal record is 4-minutes 1.31-seconds, but ran a 4:02 in Anchorage. He said as he’s gotten older and faster, he finds that shaving even a second off his personal time becomes harder.
