Welch Laments Loss of ANI Publications

It was announced late Friday that a chain of small, rural weekly newspapers in Alaska would discontinue publication.

Bethel-based Calista Corporation, which owns Alaska Newspapers Incorporated, announced that it would quit publishing its weekly papers that include the Arctic Sounder, Bristol BayTimes, Cordova Times, Dutch Harbor Fisherman, Seward Phoenix-Log and the Tundra Drums.

Long-time Kodiak journalist Laine Welch’s weekly fisheries column, Fish Factor, has appeared in each of those publications for years.

She spoke with KMXT’s Maggie Wall about the papers and what the lost of those weeklies will mean for the communities:
