In July, the Kodiak Island School District board members approved a purchase order with First Student, Inc. to provide transportation to and from schools throughout the district. At the time, the purchase order did not include a bus to and from Chiniak. However, after weighing financial options, the school board increased the purchase order during Monday night’s regular meeting to encompass the Chiniak route.

The district’s director of finance Luke Fulp said the intent was never to do away with the service, but rather look at more economically viable options.

The district found that the parents could not provide this transportation, so a bus route to and from Chiniak was needed and the purchase order increased to accommodate those costs.

Fulp said the bus is now in service, and it also caters to Chiniak students in other grade levels that have permission to attend schools in town.

School board members voted unanimously to increase the purchase order during Monday night’s regular meeting and extend bus service to Chiniak.
