A 19-year-old Kodiak fisherman injured Thursday morning near Ouzinkie has been transferred to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, where he is listed fair condition.

The Coast Guard says Daniel Cornelius suffered severe facial injuries when he was struck by a rope that snapped while onboard the fishing vessel Kittiwake. A nearby boat, the Karen Kay, contacted the Coast Guard by VHF radio at 7:23 a.m. to report the injury.

The crew of the 38-foot Kittiwake brought Cornelius to Ouzinkie where he was treated at the village medical clinic and prepared for the Coast Guard helicopter medevac.

An Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew picked Cornelius up at 10:45 a.m., and returned him to Kodiak, where an ambulance transported him to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center for further treatment.
