The Alutiiq Museum is getting some national recognition. The Native-run museum and archeological repository was recently accredited by the American Association of Museums, a process that Museum Manager Katie St. John said took 14 years

St. John said the accreditation puts the Alutiiq Museum on the map and will help it garner funding as it looks to expand.

Museum Director Sven Haakanson said it is especially meaningful because the museum is Native-run.

With the accreditation, Haakanson said the Alutiiq Museum is now being held to the same professional standards as the Anchorage Museum or even the Smithsonian. He said the museum will be reviewed every 15 years to maintain the accreditation.
