Borough Doing Away With Credit Card Payments

Starting November 1st the Kodiak Island Borough will no longer accept credit cards as a form of payment. Most people use their cards to pay for building permits or their property tax. Borough Finance Director Karl Short says the change takes some of the joy out of paying taxes.

Short says the borough is looking for a solution – perhaps through a third-party – for people who prefer to use their card.

In 2008 the borough paid over $70,000 in fees for credit card processing. In 2009 almost $78,000 and in 2010 nearly $85,000. The change comes as part of the borough’s FY 2012 budget.
