Freshmen Lead Lady Bears to State Championship

Jay Barrett/KMXT

It was a good weekend for Kodiak High School sports. The volleyball team qualified for the state tournament, while the girls’ swim team won the state championship.

The Lady Bears were led to the state swimming and diving title by a pair of freshmen, Ila Hughes and Tahna Lindquist, who between them won five state titles. Hughes won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, while Lindquist took the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. They were both on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Kodiak cruised to the state championship with 118 points. Ketchikan was a distant second, 37 points back with 81. Dimond was third with 68, followed by Juneau-Douglas and East Anchorage.

The Kodiak boys were sixth with 41 points. Dimond won with 129 points, followed by Sitka with 59 and Homer with 54. South Anchorage was fifth.

We’ve got full results after the jump.

The Kodiak volleyball team qualified for the state championships with a second place finish in the Region III tournament held at Colony High School. The Palmer Moose swept the Lady Bears for the championship Saturday night. The Wasilla Warriors also qualified for state, by finishing third.

Carole Lampl and Hannah Wandersee were named first-team all-stars, while Monya Wandersee made second-team.

State tourney play starts Thursday in Wasilla.
