The 34th annual Robin Hervey Wrestling Tournament will be held on Saturday at the Kodiak High School gym, with five dual matches filling out the schedule Friday afternoon and evening.
Attending this year are wrestlers from Service, South Anchorage, Eagle River and Nome.
Kodiak High School Athletic Director Bryan Ferris remembers the tournament’s namesake from when he was in school. He said Hervey was a commercial diver who volunteered with the wrestling program. When he later died in a diving accident, the tournament was named after him.
With the way wrestling seasons are regularly shifted around by the Alaska School Activities Association, Ferris says scheduling is always a challenge.
The dual meets Friday start at 2 p.m. with Kodiak versus Service, followed at 5:30 by Kodiak wrestling Eagle River, and South versus Nome. At 7 p.m. Kodiak wrestles South and Nome takes on Service.
The tournament proper begins at 10 Saturday morning. There will be a break at 6 p.m. for the Kodiak High School Dance Squad to perform, with the championship matches starting at 6:30.
