The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly last week approved a contract for $887,500 to construct a new parking lot at the high school.
The motion to contract Red Hook Construction, LLC passed unanimously, though not without some concern.
Assemblyman Mel Stephens said that while he would support the motion, he was worried about moving forward on projects like this without first having the high school construction plans finalized
.
— (Parking 1 :23 "I’m concerned about taking some funds from the high school project and spending them before we have an overall contract. I do understand the reason for going at this first but it does bother me that we’re approaching that matter somewhat piecemeal.")
Assemblyman Jerrol Friend saw the project as necessary regardless of the high school construction.
— (Parking 2 :16 "I honestly think this parking lot should’ve been put in years ago. If anybody’s been around the school here and tried to park when something heavily is going on or during the daytime, we’re short parking anyway. I think it’s a good plan weather we’re building the high school or not.")
The lot will provide 80 additional parking spaces. The borough expects to lose access to 180 existing spaces during the construction of the high school.
